Vermont Tubbs Beds
September 30, 2008
Vermont Tubbs is an American manufacturer of solid wood beds and casegoods. They primarily use ash and birch in their beds and many solid colors and stains are available. Vermont Tubbs beds have always been traditional in style but in recent years many modern designs have been developed that brings old world bench built furniture techniques to newer designs. This blending of quality materials and craftsmanship makes for a unique combination.
Vermont Tubbs actually began steam bending ash to produce snow shoes back in the 1840’s when William F. Tubbs had founded the company. The skills of woodworking naturally translated well into home furnishings and Vermont Tubbs soon began building bedroom furniture and casegoods growing to be one the most respected names in New England furniture.
Today Vermont Tubbs continues these traditions of wood working and building each piece of furniture by hand and this commitment to its long term employees and keeping these products American made makes Vermont Tubbs beds a welcome addition to any home. Canadian Platform Beds
September 29, 2008
Today we’re going to talk a little bit about a Canadian line of platform beds our store carries from the Passions Bedroom Collection. These beds are made in Canada from birch. There are many modern and contemporary bedroom sets and beds to choose from. Many traditional styles are also available including designs that feature a sleigh look or more straight lines if you prefer.
Many styles of casegoods are also available. Matching nightstands, armoires, chests, dressers, mirrors and more. These furniture casegoods are made in the same or similar style to the bed models they coordinate with and some styles are available two-tone or in your choice of two colors. These casegoods also feature unique drawer styles and drawer combinations that make them more unique than most other furniture. European glide systems are used throughout these pieces.
They are also available in many different finishes. From rich cappuccino to lighter white. Other colors like aluminum and grey can give you a more industrial look to your furniture. Traditional colors are also available like walnut, brandy and maple.
These are well made bed systems that use different foundation types. The Armani, Rio, Blocks and several other beds from this series use a metal foundation with wood slats. You can upgrade to a solid panel over the metal base however which will give you a foundation that will support most brands of mattress. Other beds like the Frascatti, Classic and others will use wood slats or wood panels to create the foundation of the bed.

Wood Beds
September 25, 2008
Today I’m going to talk a little bit about wood beds made by Ramblin Wood in Albuquerque, NM which are made from domestic oak and maple woods. These beds are hand made American beds. These beds are made from solid wood and are finished with a hand rubbed Danish oil finish.
Many options are also available including options to raise the headboard, raise the height of the bed or make the bed for a mattress/boxspring combination. There are also multiple slat options which allow you to stick with the spruce slats or upgrade to hardwood poplar slats. These beds are normally made as platform beds but can be made with these different options to change how the bed is made for use with your particular mattress.
Many styles are also available including southwestern, arts & crafts and modern designs. The Placitas bed captures the spirit of the Southwest by featuring a blue sunburst design in both the headboard and footboard. A truly unique design. The Sandia, Ranch and El Paso bed models feature round dowel construction in the headboard which creates an open look. The Mission bed is the classic arts & crafts design with its mission slats in the headboard. The Alpha Wave platform bed features several waves that are customizable to the number of waves in the cross piece.

Platform Bed Foundations
September 22, 2008
Platform bed foundations is a topic I’d like to discuss today. These beds often feature different types of foundations and not every mattress works with every platform bed. Typically there are two different systems.
1.) Slat support systems: Platform bed frames that use these systems typically have 10-12 wood slats that are placed across the bed. Usually banded together with a polypropylene material to get correct spacing of the slats on the platform bed. Great for innerspring mattresses, futon mattresses and some types of foam mattresses.
2.) Solid foundations: Platform bed frames that have these foundations feature solid paneling. Often these panels are placed over wood or iron supports and are mounted into them. These foundations work great for viscoelastic mattresses and memory foam mattresses that require solid foundations.
When you’re shopping for a platform bed frame or if you already own one and need a mattress I hope these comments about foundations are of help. Remember too that if you own a slat system bed and want a Tempur-Pedic style mattress or memory foam mattress you can simply purchase some 1/4″ sheets of plyboard and install these over the top of the slat system and you’ll be ready to go.

Bamboo Beds
September 21, 2008
Bamboo furniture and beds represent a new approach to ecologically friendly choices for furniture. Bamboo itself is considered a very green building material. Bamboo is actually considered a plant or grass and not a wood. It is found in temperate climates and most notably throughout Asia. China actually has the most species of bamboo plants and much of the bamboo we use is sourced from there. Bamboo grows with stalks that rise up out of the ground. These stalks can grow as high as 75 feet before being harvested. What is truly amazing is that they grow this high in about 5 years. When a bamboo plant is harvested it simply grows back again and in another 4-5 years can be harvested once more. Planting also takes place to help speed up the reproduction of these plants. Considering many woods like maple or oak take 45-50 years before they can be harvested it says a lot for bamboo as a quick and logical renewable resource.
Bamboo in the last couple of years has found its way into flooring, kitchen items like cutting boards, bowels and utensils and of course furniture. Bamboo is extremely hard as the culms of the plant harden as it grows making it as strong as domestic maple wood. Many manufacturers in the United States import bamboo boards as a raw material then cut them into the dimensions they need for a wide range of products. With its exotic grain and strong tensile strength bamboo makes a great choice in furniture and in bedrooms.

Extra Long Beds – XL Beds
September 20, 2008
Today I’m going to talk a little bit about extra long beds. Not everyone is sure what these are and I thought a little talk about these special size beds might help folks who definately need them.
When we think of beds, the majority of beds that come to mind are twin, full, queen and king size beds. These are the standard sizes used throughout the industry. However there are several sizes available that provide additional length to beds and these are referred to as extra long beds.
Extra long beds are available in twin xl (39″ x 80″) and full xl (54″ x 80″) . The reason for getting into these bed sizes is that perhaps the size of the room is small or just can’t fit a larger bed. Instead of trying to wedge a queen or king size bed into the room, extra long beds are are less wide but offer the same length as a standard queen size or king size bed. These definitely offer a better alternative to standard size beds.
These XL beds work great for dorm rooms, apartments or even older homes that have traditionally smaller size bedrooms. I’m a big supporter for these sizes of bed and they are starting to become more mainstream in terms of furniture stores that offer at least mattresses in these sizes and bed frames to a lesser extent. Sheets and bedding are also becoming more available at the mass merchant and retail stores. So it’s definately looking to be a quite positive future for extra long beds.
For more information about what is available to you in extra long bed sizes visit your local retail store or visit this link: Extra Long Beds

Country Manor Platform Bed
September 20, 2008
The Country Manor platform bed is an interesting design that features a unique headboard design. Within the headboard are square shaped designs. These designs if done in black as shown have a somewhat oriental look to them. Otherwise the bed can also be finished in wood stains to give it a more traditional look. This platform bed is made by Midwest Heirloom Furnishings and is made in the USA. Many matching casegoods are also available including nightstands, dressers, chests, mirrors and more. The Country Manor is made as a platform style bed with a 12-slat support system. It can also be made for a mattress/boxspring. Another option is to have it made with a special underbed storage system which includes built in drawers. Bench built from solid wood. It would make a great center piece to any bedroom.
